Mouse tail. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a mouse's tail. At centre is the tailbone (white). Below the two bony protuberances at the top of the bone are nerves (orange speckled circles). The large brown ovoid structures are muscles and tendons. A vein (green squiggle) is seen at top centre. The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is dark brown. Below this is the dermis (light brown), a layer of fibrous connective tissue that contains the hair follicles (blue circles), some of which are associated with sebaceous glands (orange structures). Magnification: x85 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
