Battlements similar tothose on the other sides formerly defended the east water) side ofthe ramparts. The bastions are filled with earth, and there is nofoundation for the romantic tale of a subterranean passageway fromthe southwest bastion to a neighboring convent. The moat is 40 feet wide.
