Marconi statue. Bust of Guglielmo Marconi (1874- 1937), Italian physicist, located at Villa Griffone near Bologna, Italy. It was at this villa that Marconi was born and where he transmitted the first wireless signal in spring 1895. He was aged 21 and he had developed his first radio equipment, with a range of kilometres. When the British government became interested in radio, in 1899, Marconi made a transmission across the English Channel. Two years later, Marconi made his first trans-Atlantic transmission, and in 1909 he won the Nobel Prize for Physics. He founded the Marconi Company (now GEC-Marconi). Marconi's body lies in a tomb in the grounds of the villa.
