Carbon and silicate planets. Cutaway artworks of the internal structure of a carbon-based (top) and silicate-based (bottom) planet. Humans are an example of carbon-based life, but Earth is a rocky, silicate-based planet. It is thought that carbon-based planets are possible, made mostly of silicon carbide, or carborundum. In contrast, silicate-based planets like Earth have a majority composition of oxygen-rich silicon compounds. Carbon planets are also called diamond or carbide planets.
