A sculpture of a monkey, a symbol of Buddhism, presides over one of the entrances of the Japanese bridge.

The Chua Cau (Japanese bridge) is a historic landmark in the city Hoi An, in central Vietnam. Divide two historic neighborhoods, Chinese and Japanese. Its construction lasted from 1593 until 1595. Has a size of 18 meters long and its roof is wood. It is the only known bridge that is attached on one side to a Buddhist pagoda. According to legend, the people of Hoi An built the bridge to catch a monster that was considered responsible for several earthquakes in the region. They believed that the stone pillars of the bridge were to pierce the heart of the monster.
