A Roman head of an African male with negroid features, 2nd - 3rd century Fragment of a bronze balsamarium. Fully preserved face of a black man with glass inlaid pupils. Also copper inlays at the edges of the lips. Around the neck a groove which held the inlay for the portrayal of a necklace. Wide nose and big lips. Coarsely modelled hair. On the upper left a palmette, onto which the ring of the missing handle was soldered. Surface slightly corroded. Fine, even olive-green patina. Height cm.
