Some confusionmay occur in its detectionand incomplete treatment ofthe affliction result, if this ab-normality be not Results.—Obstinatesciatica has been relieved, and even cured, by stretch-ing. Not infrequently thedegree of the resulting ec-chymosis indicates rupture of the muscular structures in bloodless Internal Popliteal Nerve.—The internal popliteal nerve can bereached by the same method and with the same caution as the poplitealartery (Fig. 336). It is, however, less deeply situated and somewhat nearerthe center of the popliteal space than are the vessels (Fig. 195). Extremecaution should be exercised in operating upon it, on account of its nearnessto the popliteal vein, which lies beneath it and to the inner side. The External Popliteal Nerve.—The external popliteal nerve can beeasily reached by making an incision two or three inches in length along. The anterior and posterior tibial nerves can be exposed and stretchedthrough the incisions adopted in ligaturing the vessels of the same names(Figs. 198 and 203). The Plantar Nerves.—The plantar nerves are the terminal branches ofthe posterior tibial, and are given off just after the nerve winds around theinternal malleolus. They can be exposed by making an incision about threeinches in length, beginning just in front of the center of a line extendingfrom the anterior border of the internal malleolus to the inner tuberosityof the OS calcis, and carried forward along the external border of the ab-ductor pollicis. If the space between the short flexor and the abductor benow opened at the posterior portion, the
