Newcomb ha^ spent mostof his life on the sea, first as a sailorbetween America and Europe, andsubsequently as a master-mariner onthe coast of the United States. Hewas at sea during the war of 1812-14;was taken prisoner and carried toHalifax, wiere he was kept in con-finement for some three months. Hequit the sea about forty years ago,and during the remainder of his ac-tive business life carried on farmingin Haverhill, Mass., where he resides,in 1879, at the advanced age of eighty-eight. Simon Newcomb, subject of this no-. £-Ot^^ ^:^€/My^^^^ tioe, was seventh in a family of sevensons and five daughters; received agood common-school and academicaleducation during his minority. Asearly as the age of twelve he beganlearning the shoemakers trade, andfor several years prior to reaching hismajority worked as journeyman at histrade. Hecame to Biddeford in 1851,and in April, 1852, commenced man-ufacturing ladies boots by hand,which business he continues in 1879,having kept pace with the demandsof trade and with the latest improve-ments known to the business. Heused the first sewing-machine in con-nection with his business, brought toBiddeford, and possibly used in YorkCounty. He is the oldest shoe-manu-facturer in York County. Mr. New-comb is a practical shoe-manufacturer,and from his first beginning on thebench he has actively and successfullyfollowed the business. His tradeextends throughout New E
