J., Nov. 19, 1810. At eleven yearsof age he commenced the study of Hebrew withoutan instructor, and in spite of the fact that the onlyHebrew text-book within his reach was withoutvowel points. He entered Amherst college in 1825,before he was fifteen years of age, and while theretook up, in addition to the regular studies ofthe curriculum, Chaldee and Syriac. The gram-mar used by him in his work upon the latter lan-guage he himself translated from Latin into Eng-lish. After being graduated in 1829 he entered theAndover theological seminary, and was ordained tothe Christian ministry three years later. The sameyear he sailed for Greece as a He la-bored in Greece, principally at Argos, until 1838,then among the Greek population of Smyrna, Tur-key, for five years, after which he devoted himselfto the Armenians; then went to labor at Con-stantinople. Early in his career he translated theBible into Armenian and Bulgarian, and assisted in. the joint translation into the Turkish language,which appeared in 1878. While on a visit to thiscountry, 1856-58, he taught Hebrew for a short timein the Union theological seminary. The degree was conferred upon him by Hanover college,Indiana, in 1858, and that of from Amherstin 1871. Besides numerous religious works, andthose mentioned above, he has published grammarsof the Chaldee, Bulgarian, Modern Armenian andTurkish languages. HALE, Jolm Parker, U.
