From the description given in the Roll, it may be re-garded as certain, that the site of the Manor House wasidentical with that now known as Kingston of this manor were held by the yearly pay-ment of a silken lace, a pound of cummin seed, arent of ten shillings, or a pair of gilt spurs, at the choiceof the Lord. The following are some of the principal ownershipsand old grants of land, &c., in the Hundred :— i. FRAGMENTS OF CAUVED STONE-WOUK, KINGSTON MANOR HOUSE. THE HUNDRED OF SWANBOEOUGH. 143 Earl Warren gave to God and the Abbot of Cluni, five hidesand a half of land in Swambergh.*^ Confirmed in 1397 ; see p. 144. same Earl granted to the Monks of Lewes Priory, free fishing inthe waters of Swanburgh.*^ , 2nd Earl Warren, gave to God and St. Pancrace three hidesand a half of land in Kyngeston.^ 1142. William, 3rd Earl Warren, gave by deed to the Monks of Lewes, twohides and a half of land in Yford in free charity ; also two hides ofland, which William, son of Godwin, held ; and in the following yearhalf a hide of land in Kyngeston, for his soul and those of his parents,in pure and perpetual charity.^ same earl gave to Lewes Priory the land which Bricteline had inSwambergh in suburbio castelli sui.*^ de Plaiz gave to the monks of Lewes the windmill in his manorof Iford,
