Blue sky view four East German Trabant 601 cars in queue of traffic by Reichstag Building, Scheidemannstrasse, Berlin, Germany

Many East Germans moved west in their Trabants after the fall of communism in 1989, so the Trabant has iconic status as a symbol of the former East Germany. The Trabant has a body made of Duroplast, a hard plastic made from recycled cotton waste and resins from the dye industry. Other fibres were also used including recycled paper, giving rise to the idea that the body is made of cardboard. The lightweight body gives good acceleration and speed from the two-stroke, two-cyclinder air-cooled petrol engine. The model in the photo is the Trabant 601.
