AaronBurr. The vice-president under President Jefiferson, at hisfirst election, was Aaron Burr, who was one of themost brilliant men of that period. He and Jeffersonhad precisely the same number of votes for president;so that the House of Representatives had to decidebetween them, as was the rule ; and, after a great manyballotings, Jefferson was chosen president, and Burrvice-president. Burr had distinguished himself as asoldier and as a statesman ; but he lost most of hispopularity, after he had killed, in a duel, his politicalrival, Alexander Hamilton, who was much more be-loved than himself, and who had performed an im-portant part in establishing the government. Through SETTLEMENT OF OHIO. 243 this unpopularity, Burr failed to be re-elected vice-presi-dent in Jeffersons second term ; and he was afterwardsgenerally believed to have formed a plan to invadeMexico, and to separate several States from the was tried for treason on this charge, but was ac-quitted
