The Worth Monument, doubling as a mausoleum, is a 51 ft high granite obelisk, with 5 decorative bands commemorating the military campaigns, including the Mexican-American war 1846-48, associated with General Worth (1794-1849). The 5-tier obelisk, at the intesection of 5th Avenue, Broadway and West 25th Street, dates to 1857 and, after the Statue of George washington in Union Square, is the second oldest major monument in New York City. The Commodore Criterion Building, to the rear of the monument dates to 1915.
