About1845 it was found thatthe finances of Mussel-burgh had been soclumsily managed, thatit was forced to becomebankrupt, with a debtof about £19,000. Sincethat time the revenueshave been in the handsof trustees; and thetown council controlsonly some £150 annu-ally ; though several ofits members are, exofficio,members also of theboard of trustees. Theharbour, as already ex-plained, is a serious burden on the finances. The debtnow amounts to £9300. Musselburgh unites withLeith, Portobello, and Newhaven in returning a mem-ber to parliament. The corporation revenue in1882-83 was £2293 ; whilst the municipal and the par-liamentary constituency numbered 1286 and 1044 in1884, when the annual value of real property was£26,633 (£18,296 in 1867).
