The stems of coontail {Ceratophyllumdemersum) are thickly clothed withround, dense masses of foliage (Figs. 21and 22), which in shape amply justifythe common name so widely used in theSouth, and which is here adopted for theplant. Coontail is a submerged plant,but only exceptionally is it attached to THE GAME BREEDER 81 the bottom, as it has no roots; it usuallygrows in rather quiet waters from 2 to10 feet deep. The leaves are composedof slender but rather stiff filaments,twice or thrice forked, and sparinglyfurnished with small acute grow in whorls of from 5 to 12,and are usually much crowded on theupper part of the stem.
