Statue comemmorating the deaths at sea of a disaster that occurred in 1905. All the fishermen were lost, they came from separate villages around Tromso. The memorial has pride of place in the main square of the town. The town was a pre-historic place settled by Norse and Sami people before 1083. It was in the 19th century that it became famous through the expedition to the south pole organised by Roald Amundssen. Tromso is the centre for studies of the Aurora Borealis. The most northerly city is a cultural centre for its region with electronic music festival in the summertime.
