Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto (1697-1768). Landscape with a Villa seen through a ruined Arch. Oil on canvas. Images of picturesque ruins shown with recognisable buildings and colourful local figures were very popular with travellers to Italy. Canaletto's art was so admired by British collectors that he worked in London for several years between 1746 and 1755.
