Long island, also called Seal island, in the Houtman Abrolhos. Following the Batavia shipwreck and mutiny of 1629 some of the 125 murders occurred here. Beacon island can be seen in the middle distance across Goss Passage, the shipwreck site is located in the whitewater at top right. (Note: these images are not shot through glass, the plane door is off). On June 4, 1629 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship Batavia struck Morning reef in the Wallabi Group of the Houtman Abrolhos before dawn. Survivors made it to nearby islands, but a subsequent mutiny led to the mass murder of approximately 125 men, women and children. The Houtman Abrolhos islands lie 60 kilometres off the coast of Geraldton in Western Australia. There are 122 pristine islands in three major groups; the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert groups stretching from north to south across 100 kilometres of the Indian Ocean.
