Nature granted Tel Aviv-Jaffa a wonderful gift: 14 kilometers of seashore. During the hot summer months the beach attracts thousands of people, who enjoy the cool relief of the seawater, the suntan and the various beach games. In the other seasons of the year, when the sun's rays are softer, many tourists come to the beach from the many hotels on the seafront. When Tel Aviv expanded, the founding fathers were swift to develop beach equipment and amusements on a shore. In the 1920s, there were the famous bathing areas and the casino, where people used to sip a cold beverage, but not gamble. In the 1930s, a splendid promenade marked the site. In the last decade, at the initiative of the previous Mayor, Mr. Shlomo Lahat, the promenade was renovated and became one of the most popular beauty spots of the city, after years when the area was derelict. Dozens of restaurants, clubs and entertainment places have opened along the renewed promenade and during the summer months, thousands of people stroll along its length, many of them until the small hours of the morning. Another popular site along the beachfront is the marina, which is used as an anchorage by scores of boats and yachts, some of them seagoing. The Municipal Beaches Department provides lifeguard services, supervision of the maintenance and cleanliness on the bathing beaches of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, from the boundary of Herzlia in the North to Bat Yam in the South. In the framework of the Municipal Beaches Department's authority are the following activities: • Observation of bathers' security and comfort. • Inspection and enforcement of the urban bylaws in the area of beaches. • Upkeep of the beach facilities. • Prevention of parking in forbidden places. • Prevention of peddling. • Exclusion of animals (except for permitted places). • Prevention of theft. The activity hours of the Municipal Beaches Department are as follows: April, May and September: 07:00 - 17:00. June: 07:00 - 18:00.
