Souterrain Earth-Houses Dating from the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD near Tealing Village in Tayside Scotland, UK

Tealing Souterrain - Souterrains were cellars built partly or wholly underground alongside ot attached to timber buildings above ground. They are also known as Earth-Houses although they were used primarilyfor storage rather than Dwellings. There are several distinct regional types of Souterrains ranging from fairly massive constructions such as this one in Tayside to small underground chambers in the Northern Isles of Scotland. Those in the Eastern and Southern Scotland seem to date to the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD while the Northern Souterrains may have dated earlier.
