A late 19th Century illustration from the Book of Genesis of the two daughters of Laban at the well. Laban, who lived in Mesopotamia was the brother of Isaac’s wife, Rebekah. The oldest daughter, Leah was rather plain, while the younger named Rachel was shapely and beautiful. Laban promised his younger daughter Rachel to Rebekah's son Jacob in return for seven years' service, only to trick him into marrying his elder daughter Leah instead. Jacob then served another seven years in exchange for the right to marry his choice, Rachel.
