Stokes was represented at the inquest by the famouscriminal lawyers, John Graham and John McKeon, and byWillard Bartlett. Ex-Judges William A. Beach and WilliamFullerton appeared for the people. The family of Stokes was influential and wealthy, andnothing was left undone to save him. He was tried for themurder of Fisk in July, 1S72, and the jury disagreed, July15th. He was retried, and January, 1873, was convicted ofmurder in the first degree, and sentenced, January 6th, byTudge Boardman, to be hanged February 28th. A new trialwas obtained, and it resulted in a verdict of manslaughter inthe third degree, October 29, 1873. Stokes was sentencedto four years in Sing Sing prison, and served his time.
