False-colour thermogram of the front wheel of a car. Thermography is an imaging technique used to visualise heat distribution. This relies on the emission of long-wavelength infrared radiation by the object in proportion to its temperature. The radiation is detected electronically and displayed by intensity. Here, the temperatures are colour coded from blue (coolest) to white (hottest) according to the scale at right. The source of heat here is the disc of the braking system, still hot after a run. The heat is seen radiating along cooling vents in the wheel. The cool central area is a plastic dust cap over the wheel hub.
