This is a 360º panorama of the all-sky aurora of February 10, 2024, from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (the building in the distance), on the site of the old Churchill Rocket Range outside Churchill, Manitoba. At latitude 58º north, Churchill is under the usual location of the auroral oval, for sky-filling displays on many clear nights. This was a Kp4-level display, though that was an unexpected level of activity this night. Predictions had been calling for only Kp1 or 2 at best. But a surprise coronal mass ejection impacted Earth this night and raised the auroral activity up a couple of notches on the Kp scale, resulting in a more extensive sky-filling display with more active motion and multiple curtains and bands. Note the colours, with varying shades of green, perhaps due to a mix of oxygen green auroral lines and hydrogen beta emisssion, plus the reds from high-altitude oxygen. The aurora tints the snow green. At left is Orion amid the winter stars setting. West is near centre; south left of centre; north right of centre; east at the two edges. A vehicle with aurora photographers out on the Range is lighting the old blockhouse building at far left. The lights of Churchill 20 km away illuminate the sky in the distance behind the CNSC. This is a panorama of 9 segments, each 15 seconds with the TTArtisan 11mm full-frame fish-eye lens at and the Canon R6 at ISO 1600. Stitched flawlessly with PTGui (with equirectangular projection) as Camera Raw and Photoshop cannot handle such pano images with that wide a lens, and with a 360º sweep. .
