Andromeda galaxy. Optical image of part of the Andromeda galaxy (M31, NGC 224; lower left) and its companion galaxy NGC 205 (top right). North is at top. M31 is the closest major galaxy to our own, lying around million light years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is the largest galaxy in our local group, around 180,000 light years across, half as big again as our Milky Way. This image was made by the CFH12K CCD camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
