Coronary angioplasty surgery. Surgeon inflating a balloon catheter during an angioplasty on a patient's coronary artery. Angioplasty is used to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. A balloon catheter is inserted into the narrowed area and inflated to force the vessel open. It is then deflated and retracted back out of the body. Here the balloon catheter will be used to place and expand a stent (wire mesh tube) at the narrowed area of the coronary artery. Once expanded the stent will be left in place to hold the artery open.
