Schwerin orangery café
The unique landmark of the state capital is the fairytale castle with its illustrious golden towers and turrets that stands on an island in the "Schweriner See" - Schwerin Lake. This was once the site of the island castle "Zuarin" which was burned down in 1160 by the prince of the Abodrites Niclot in the face of the siege by Henry the Lion. The re-constructed castle became the ducal seat of Schwerin and later of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. During the 16th and 17th centuries the castle was converted into a palace. In the middle of the 19th century the castle underwent fundamental conversion work according to the plans of Demmler, Willebrand and Stüler using Gottfried Semper's ideas. These then were the origins of the most beautiful fairytale castle in Germany modelled on the French Renaissance chateau Chambord. Its facades are shaped by seven different styles of architecture. It is said that the castle is adorned with as many turrets as there are days in the year. Today, the castle is the seat of the Land parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is home to the castle museum on 3 floors. Here you can admire the state apartment and the representation rooms of the Grand Duke as well as the magnificently designed throne room of the castle. In the castle café, the former royal room, visitors have the opportunity to dine in stately fashion in the historic atmosphere and to let all of the impressions they have gained sink in. In the summer months enjoy the wonderful view from the restored orangery across the blue expanse of Schwerin Lake and allow yourself to be pampered in Mediterranean flair under palm trees and orange trees in the orangery café. Immerse yourself in an era in which the Duke strolled through the English Garden and relaxed in the shade of the rock grotto.
