I had picked upabout thirty during the late afternoon and evening fishing, and as myappetite was unusually good, I was anxious to get into camp. In wad-ing across I had out perhaps thirty feet of line and was carelesslycasting in front of me taking a chance that I might hook one, and Idid—my first Dolly Varden! I was using a nine-foot tapering leaderand a number 12 white miller dry fly, and in order to keep fromlosing the fish, I want to say that he came nearly drowning me. Afterabout twenty minutes we landed on the riffle which I had originallyplanned to cross on, and I was able to get him up into the shallowwater and holding him up with my rod got my fingers in his gills andhe found his way to the creel. As this was: my first Dollie Varden Iwas naturally very proud of landing him, and one of the accompanyingpictures shows you his 26 THE OREGON SPORTSMAN Mrs. Smith, who is a very enthusiastic sportswoman, accompaniesme on all of my fishing trips and is quite expert in casting a fly up to about thirty feet. She is equippedwith hip waders, and has no fear ofswift water; while she has nevermade any big catches, yet she haspicked up 15 and 18 on a fly in adays sport. We are both enthusiastic in flyfishing,—do not use bait, and Ihope the time comes in Oregon whensalmon eggs will not be allowed tobe used on our streams. I wasonce the user of salmon eggs, butsince I have learned the art of flycasting, thanks to Mooch Abrahams, fishing ceases to be sport unless Ican catch them on a fly. I had two deer hunts and wassuccessful in hearing them, but notseeing them, because it was verydry. I found a condition in themountains which is no doubt verycommon to the old deer hunter, something that interested me verymuch as I am a great believer inconservation of game.
