The Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32m (108ft) tall 'Big Wheel', here illuminated. A partially lit Blackpool Tower rises behind the Big Wheel.
