Properties generally bitter, acrid and ualrinj^ent, with a Ui Vy Juice in the root. Khatany-root, the root of Kraineria, used in medicine, yields a deep red color and is used to adulterate port wine. The more active gpe ;ies of Polygala, as P. Senega, sanguineu, purpurea, etc., are emetic, purgative and diu- retic. POLYGALA, Tourn. Milkwort. (Gr.
