English landmarks. The familiar statue popularly known as Eros reflecting the neon city lights of Piccadilly Circus, at night. London, England, UK.
This familiar iconic winged statue stands on top of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in Piccadilly Circus. It represents the Greek god Anteros but is popularly known, mistakenly, as Eros. Anteros was the god of requited love, literally “love returned”. Eros, the god of desire, was his older brother. The piece was created by the painter and sculptor Alfred Gilbert and was one of the first sculptures ever to be cast in aluminium. The lightness of aluminium made it possible to support the entire weight of the sculpture on one slender ankle, to create a very fine and delicate composition. Unfortunately the softness of the metal makes the figure rather fragile and easily bent out of shape. The statue was erected in 1892-93 to commemorate the philanthropic work of the Victorian politician Lord Shaftesbury.
