The jar is for the most part coveredby a thick coating of massed incrustations, tufa-like in effectbut green, the fecund green of dense pond-scum. In places theincrustations, disintegrating the metal, replace it with substanceof their own verdant hue; elsewhere a fine black patina with softmalachite mottlings coats the surface; and again where incrusta-tion has been prevented or in course of time removed, as in thebottom of the interior, the purity of the original surface isrevealed. A fret band above a bold ring, on the neck, containingfour pha?nixes in bas-relief and accentuated by two outstandingmonster-heads, forms the sole decoration. The makers name isincised in the interior of the bottom. The stand is inlaid withsilver. The chief decoration consistsof a broad band bearing an intricate interlacement of an in-cised ribbon-scroll involving a conventionalized dragon form ininnumerable repetitions, the same motive being repeated in anarrower band below a rope girdle.
