Kidney cancer. Sectioned gross specimen of a clear cell carcinoma of a kidney. Also known as a hypernephroma and a renal adenocarcinoma, the cancer is the abnormal mass at centre and centre right. This type of cancer accounts for the vast majority of malignant kidney tumours. Carcinoma refers to its origin in the epithelial tissues of the kidney. There are few symptoms in the early stages and the tumour is resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. If it is localized, the tumour is surgically removed.
