In Philippines Invasion. Coast Guard Captain Charles Dean, USCG, of Pascagoula, Miss., pins Purple Heart on a Navy crew member, Nelson Wilcox, seaman first class, of Detroit, Mich. Wilcox was wounded in assault on Saipan. He also saw action in the Gilbert, Marshall, and Mariannas invasions. The award was made aboard the Coast Guard manned invasion transport on which they served in the invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines.
