The Astor Place Riot, May 10, 1849 in front of the now-demolished Astor Place Opera House, New York, USA. Fuelled by rivalry between Shakespearian actors American Edwin Forrest and Englishman William Charles Macready and their respective supporters the feud was used to support conflictive social ideas which resulted in a gathering of several thousand in Astor Place which quickly got out of hand. Militia were brought who fired point blank into the crowd killing more than 20 people and wounding over 100. After a contemporary lithograph by Nathaniel Currier.
