The population of the city is 1,658,000, coveringan area of 83,340 acres, of which we believe a less pro-portion is unoccupied or thinly settled than in eitherChicago or New York. In order to furnish fire protection for this area, theBureau of Fire of the Department of Public Safetymaintains a fully paid force of 1,022 men in 71s fire sta-tions, and uses 172 pieces of apparatus in addition to afire boat and repair truck.
