There was but one way out of it forme; slipping oil myhorse, I allowed them to ride over me, and thus escaped, but considerably theworse for mud. I was thus enabled to report to General Baxter the number of theenemy, and when they tried their tricks again we ambuscaded them byhalting the yth New York Regiment on the side of the road, who gave themsuch a warm reception that we were allowed to return in peace.
