Stairways will lead upthe mound on the four sides to the doorways leading to an elevatorthat will take the visitor to the top of the pedestal. The pedestal would have been completed much sooner, had theappeal of the American Pedestal Committee to the public beenresponded to with greater alacrity. A lack of enthusiasm seemed topervade the people, and plans for raising money were very poorlycarried out, notwithstanding the statue had been completed, and was. cember, 1884. Aftera short respite, it wasagain resumed onMay 11, 1885, andcontinued without in-terruption, and wascompleted by puttingon the last layer ofstone in April of thisyear. The stone wasfrom a quarry on expected to he shipped to this country. At this juncture the NewYork World, a leading paper of the city, used its vast influenceand circulation, and by a stirring- appeal and offer to receive sub-scriptions in aid of the pedestal fund, succeeded in the accomp-lishment of raising $100,000. A noble cause; a mighty effort;a great success. All honor to the World, and may the erectionof the majestic image fully repay it for its exertions in thisdirection. In the latter part of June, )885, the French vessel, the Isefe,from Rouen, France, having on board the statue, packed in 210cases, sailed into New York harbor.
