FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES Samples collected for this study were plotted on existing topographic maps (Text-figs. 4-11). Traverses were surveyed by pace or tape and Brunton compass. Where samples were obtained from more than one continuous sequence, adjacent sections were aligned by extension of strike (Text-figs. 4, 8). Stratigraphic thicknesses were resolved graph- ically. Because of soil and climatic conditions in southern California, Fora- minifera are often leached from outcrops of a sandy or silty nature whereas.
