QCDOC supercomputer. Known as QCDOC machines, for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) on a chip, these supercomputers performed the complex calculations relating to the lattice gauge theory that describes the interactions of quarks and gluons and the force that holds atomic nuclei together. This supercomputer was unveiled in 2005 at the RIKEN BNL Brookhaven Research Center (RBRC), Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. It followed an earlier lattice QCD supercomputer (the QCDSP) and was retired in 2011 to be followed by the QCDCQ supercomputer. Photographed in 2005.
