. Edible and poisonous plants of the Caribbean region . 50. Black Nightshade Solanum nigrum The tender leaves and young shoots are cooked like spinach. The berries are not eaten. In some regions the berries have been found poisonous. This soft-stemmed weedy plant, usually not over 3 feet high, is common to all areas in the Caribbean region. Its small flowers are light purple or white, and its fruit is a small blackish-purple berry with numerous seeds. It is also called the garden huckleberry, yerba mora, and pintamora in Panama; and mucuy in Guatemala.
