Stricture.—On making a section of a testicle affected with simplechronic inflammation, the tunica vaginalis will be found to be more orless adherent, and perhaps separated from the tunica all)uginea in partsby small collections of fluid. The tunica albuginea is thickened, oftenpresenting on its external surface a series of firm, glistening septa of the testis are seen to be thickened, rendeiing the wholeorgan hard and firm, and giving it a bluish-grey appearance. In themidst of this, soft opaque yellow spots may be seen. These have beenmistaken for tubercle, but are in reality masses of chronic inflammatory. The microscopeshows that the chronic inflammation chiefly affects the intertubularfibrous tissue, but in many cases this is accompanied by catarrhal over-growth of the epithelium. Prognosis,—Simple chronic orchitis usually terminates in recovery, but the organ may be left somewhat enlarged and indurated, or in othercases it may undergo atrophy as the inflammatory products become ab-sorbed. Treatment.—Strapping and the administration of an alterative courseof bichloride of mercury may be tried. If the organ do not diminish insize by these means, or if it be a source of much inconvenience to thepatient, it must be removed. If accompanied by hydrocele the hydro-cele must be tapped, but on no account should injection of iodine be re-sorted to. If abscesses form, they must be opened.
