Bloodletting sites. 15th century diagram with text illustrating the veins and zodiac sites where blood was extracted using cuts or leeches. Bloodletting, or phlebotomy, was thought to cure illnesses believed to be caused by imbalances in bodily fluids. The diagram, known as a vein man, is from Johannes de Ketham's Fasciculus Medicinae (Venice, 1491).
