Lifting fingerprints. Image 3 of 3. Forensic officer using an adhesive plastic strip to lift a fingerprint from a cup. Fine dust was used to mark the distinctive ridged pattern of oil left by a fingertip. The adhesive strip removes the dust and preserves a record of the pattern. This can then be used to identify the person who held the cup, and link them to this crime scene. Care must be taken to avoid destroying fingerprints, which are easily damaged. Gloves are worn to avoid adding fingerprints. The other protective clothing is worn to avoid contaminating the crime scene. For a sequence of images showing the recovery of a fingerprint, see H200/184-186.
