The dictionary of needlework : an encyclopaedia of artistic, plain, and fancy needlework dealing fully with the details of all the stitches employed, the method of working, the materials used, the meaning of technical terms, and, where necessary, tracing the origin and history of the various works described . efore selected and workedseparately, and afterwards united, and Applique uponthe velvet or silk backgi-ound; but the full-size designgives a just idea of the whole, and enables the workerto fit the various pieces correctly together. Stretch thelinen foundation in a frame, and pounce the outlineof the part to be worked upon it with charcoal, andset or paint this outline with Indian ink. Carefully tack in any pieces of enrich-ments, such as gold tissue orbrocade, and commence thework with raised Couchingsor with the laying down ofgold threads. Work theselines of gold thread so as tofollow the wave of the partthey are ornamenting. Fig. 128 is muchreduced from natural size; an ornament so small asit is represented rarely has threads laid down. Use wavylines of gold more than straight ones; they are shown inworking detail in Fig. 129, and are managed in two ways,. Fig. 128. Church Embroidery.—Working Detail.
