Ming Dynasty stoneware figure of a Budai in The British Museum in London
This is a stoneware figure of Budai under green and ochre glazes dated from the Ming dynasty in the 15th century. Budhai, the fat smiling monk is an accretion of many legends. He is sometimes regarded as an incarnation of the future buddha, the buddha who will follow Shakyamuni. It is in this role that Budai is placed in the entrance hall of temples and monasteries.
