The Order of Precedence, a matter of no inconsiderable im-portance in a tighly civilized and equally complicated conditionof society, was first established upon a definite system by astatute of Henry VIII., in 1539. Various subsequent regula-tions have taken efiect, and have contributed, in connection withEoyal Letters Patent, to produce the Precedence now regardedas established and practically^ in force amongst us. This order of Precedence may be considered to be based uponthe following fouifold principle; first, that persons of everydegree of rank, except descendants of the blood royal, whoalways have precedence, should take place according to theseniority of the creation of such rank; secondly, that the PRECEDENCE. 429 younger sons of each preceding degree of rank should take placeimmediately after the eldest son of the next succeed
