Edwards began his work on human fertilisation around 1960, achieving fertilisation in the laboratory in 1968. He then worked with Patrick Steptoe to develop IVF techniques. The first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born in 1978. Edwards was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on IVF.
