Report on the Comet of 1580. Opening page of a pamphlet published in London reporting on the comet of 1580. The opening lines are: 'A blazyng starre or burnyng beacon, seene the 10 October laste (and yet continewyng) set on fire by God's providence, to call all sinners to earnest and speedie repentance'. The author Francis Shakelton is described as 'minister and preacher of the worde of God'. At bottom is an Old Testament biblical quote: 'I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke' (Joel, 2:30). Comets were often taken as an omen of some impending doom.
