Locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . nderneath, or,in other words, make it a sup-ported wooden splices are not put in to sup-port the ends of the rails, but to tie themtogether longitudinally and prevent theirspreading. In laying insulated wires in trunking, they should never be tightly drawn to takeout the slack, and whenever a bend is made,or a wire leads off at right angles from themain wire, several inches of slack wireshould be left to allow for changes inlength due to contraction. In runningwires from one signal to the next, it ismuch the better and cheaper plan to putthe wire on the telegraph poles in prefer-ence to putting them in the ground. Withthe former method, while there is thechance of the wire being occasionallybroken by storms or from poles fallingdown, such breakage is easily detected andrepaired ; while with the latter method itis very hard to locate any break in thewires, particularly if laid in the form of acable. On account of the difficulty of detectingbreaks and the annovance occasioned bv. A Battery Well. having a signal fail to work, it is a goodplan to use a wire of comparatively largesize and covered with good insulation, rather than to use as small a wire as willcarry the current without too great a re-sistance. We are using an insulated wireof No. 14 Birmingham wire .gage withgreat success, and have never been troubledwith its breaking after being once properlyput in. With regard to the relay to be used, agreat deal of care should be used in select-ing one that is correctly designed for to which it is to be put ; for, whilethe wiring up may have been poorly done,it will give good service as long as it lasts ;whereas with the relay, if not especiallyadapted to the work it is to perform, itwill not work properly during wet weather, and will be continually giving a relay will not work, there is no-thing that a repairman can do, except, perhaps, to have a bull
